A tornado takes down the hangar
Three pictures from the late 80's. When the "lumber shed type hanger" was taken down by a tornado. This hanger was on the same ground as the present apartment and old EAA club house.
If you look closely under the roofing material you will notice there are three planes visible. The yellow plane on the far left is a Chief that was undergoing restoration by Stan Spruill. One of the other photos shows a view of the back of the Chief unfortunately, the back is broken.
In the middle is a Monnett Sonori II belonging to KV Lundy. The gear was smashed flat. A side note here is when the building was taken off the airplane it "stood up" and had no other damage. KV Lundy only had to replace the gear and he was off and flying. This Sonori was later traded to Andy Ewing for a Schweitzer Sail plane. Andy painted it black and after flying it a couple years sold it and as of April 09 N555KV is still in service and flying.
The last picture shows the L-2 built by Stan Spruill. Now you know why he took the opportunity to re-build. In its final L-2 configuration it was a delight to fly and Virgil logged over 70 hours in the L-2 before flying his RV 3.
A quick update on N555KV, as of April 09 it is still flying and offered for sale in West Virginia. As it appears now...
